Call for popular mobilisation throughout France and Europe around 8 May 2025

80 years ago, Europeans celebrated the victory over fascism and Nazism in Europe. On this 80th anniversary, we want more than ever to preserve the free and united Europe we have inherited, and which we now see under threat.

From this experience of war and the crimes of totalitarian regimes, men and women after the Second World War came up with resolute and ambitious plans to make war impossible in Europe and throughout the world. To overcome the endemic state of war in Europe and the world, our predecessors built an international order based on law guaranteed by international institutions; they elevated human dignity and human rights above the sovereign powers of States to ensure that these horrors never happened again; they shaped our liberal democracies and our models of social protection; they united Europe around these principles and these rights. This is the project that was the genesis of the European Union we know today, and which has given us eighty years of peace within it. We are its heirs and it is our responsibility to pass on this heritage in our turn.

Faced once again with nationalist rhetoric, threats and imperialist wars in Europe and around the world unprecedented since the end of the Second World War, today we want to resist and act to protect the foundations of peace, democracy, rights and European unity that we have helped to build and implement. We want to reiterate our support for the Ukrainian people, who share these values and are resisting to win peace and security.

The project of peace, freedom and democracy, equality and solidarity, respect for every human being, is still today a credible model for the unification of Europe and the pacification of the world. It is an alternative to national-populism and the new imperialisms that are on the rise in Europe and around the world.

That's why we're getting together across France and Europe on 8 and 9 May 2025 to reaffirm our visceral attachment to peace and democracy for a free and united Europe.
