Launched in January 2024, the SHAPE (Shaping Social Europe) project explored the role of the social partners in shaping EU treaties and legislation in the field of social policy. The project aims to generate new insights into how the social partners’ past experiences in building «Social Europe» can inform their role in responding to the major socio-economic and geopolitical challenges facing the EU today.

One of the main results of this project, led by the Archives of the European Union, is the creation of a unique archive and exhibition on Social Europe (1974-1996).

Building on these historical foundations, the ASPE Group has examined the current state of industrial relations in the EU Member States and developed proposals for updating the social dimension of the EU Treaties in line with the evolving responsibilities of the social partners.

Main results to be presented :

  • Final report on the changing role of the social partners in responding to current and future challenges in the world of work.
  • Draft proposals to update the social provisions of the EU Treaties, to be submitted for stakeholder consultation in Paris.

These results will be presented and discussed with key stakeholders at the event, organised by Maison Jean Monnet. The meeting will bring together high-level representatives from European and national social partner organisations.

The SHAPE project is led by Professor Claire Kilpatrick, co-director of the Academy of European Law.
