Born into a Jewish family of Lorraine origin, she was deported to Auschwitz at the age of 16 during the Holocaust, where she lost her father, brother and mother. From then on, she became an icon in the fight against discrimination against women in France.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Simone Veil by the Association Jean Monnet\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lzAQhMQB42E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She was the first President of the newly elected European Parliament, a position she held from 1979 to 1982. In general, she is considered one of the promoters of Franco-German reconciliation and European construction. From 1993 to 1995, she was Minister of State, Minister of Social Affairs, Health and Urban Affairs in the \u00c9douard Balladur government. She was a member of the Constitutional Council from 1998 to 2007, before being elected to the Acad\u00e9mie fran\u00e7aise in 2008.
