International Historical Colloquium "Jean Monnet and the Economy

News

14 September 2016

International conference organised by the Jean Monnet Association,
under the direction of Professor Gérard Bossuat.

In many squares and streets, the name of Jean Monnet is associated with the profession of economist, rather than with the proposal for European unity of 9 May 1950.

But was Jean Monnet really an economist? What was his relationship with the world of economics in its concrete dimension throughout his life?

The 10 international researchers present at this conference will shed light on these questions in the light of their recent work on this little-known aspect of the life and work of the "Father of Europe".

A round-table discussion bringing together leading figures from the economic world, at the end of the conference, will consider the relevance of bringing to the fore today the subjects which yesterday constituted fertile ground for the development of Monnet's thinking and action in the organisation of the young European Economic Community, as possible avenues for the relaunch of the European project.

Opening speech by Mr Michel SAPIN,
Minister of Economy and Finance.

Cocktail at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
in the presence of Mr Harlem DÉSIR, Secretary of State for European Affairs.
